UPM Contributes Halal Certification Expertise to the Community

KAMPUNG KEDA BAGAN NAKA, 6 Feb – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) continues to play an active role in knowledge transfer by contributing its halal certification expertise to the community through the Halal Product Certification and Food Product Labelling Awareness Workshop. The programme aimed to enhance awareness among local product entrepreneurs on the importance of halal products and food safety.

This contribution also reflects UPM’s visibility and engagement with external institutions and communities, in line with the university’s latest strategic plan, True North UPM, which emphasizes impact, engagement, and the sustainability of university–community relationships.

The programme, held from 2 to 4 February 2026 at Koperasi Pembangunan Kampung Keda Bagan Naka Berhad (KPKKBNB), was organised by Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and involved participation from local food entrepreneurs. The workshop featured Professor Dr. Suhaimi Ab Rahman from the School of Business and Economics, and Ms. Roszaimah Muhammad Sapah from the Halal Science Research Laboratory, Institute of Halal Products Research (IPPH), UPM.

According to Professor Dr. Suhaimi Ab Rahman, understanding halal certification is not only crucial from a regulatory compliance perspective, but also serves as a strategic element in enhancing the competitiveness and marketability of local entrepreneurs’ products.

Meanwhile, Ms. Roszaimah emphasised that entrepreneurs must fully understand the meaning of halal products to ensure compliance with all halal certification standards, thereby guaranteeing the production of safe, high-quality products and maintaining consumer confidence.

A site visit to business premises around Kampung Keda Bagan Naka was also conducted to provide participants with hands-on exposure to the implementation of halal logos, compliance with hygiene standards, and safe operational practices in real settings.

“This workshop is very beneficial as it provides clear understanding on how to apply for halal certification, whether for products or food premises. I hope programmes like this can be organised again in the future,” said Mr. Muhammad Izzat, one of the participants, during an interview.
