Universiti Putra Malaysia Contributes Halal Certification Expertise to the Community

KAMPUNG KEDA BAGAN NAKA, 6 Feb – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) continues to play an active role in knowledge transfer by contributing its expertise in halal certification to the community through the Product Certification and Food Product Labelling Awareness Workshop, aimed at increasing awareness of the importance of halal products and food safety among local food entrepreneurs. This contribution also demonstrates UPM’s visibility and engagement with external institutions and the wider community, in line with the university’s latest strategic plan, True North UPM, which emphasises impact, engagement, and sustainable university-community relationships.

The programme, held from 2 to 4 February 2026 at Koperasi Pembangunan Kampung Keda Bagan Naka Berhad (KPKKBNB), was organised by Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) with the participation of local food entrepreneurs. The workshop featured Professor Dr. Suhaimi Ab Rahman and Puan Roszaimah Muhammad Sapah from the Halal Products Research Institute (IPPH), UPM.

According to Professor Dr. Suhaimi Ab Rahman, understanding halal certification is important not only from the perspective of regulatory compliance, but also as a strategic element in enhancing the competitiveness and marketability of local entrepreneurs’ products.

Meanwhile, Puan Roszaimah Muhammad Sapah stated that entrepreneurs need to fully understand the meaning of halal products to ensure compliance with all halal certification standards, thereby guaranteeing the production of safe, high-quality products that can maintain consumer confidence.

A site visit to business premises around Kampung Keda Bagan Naka was also conducted to provide participants with direct exposure to the implementation of halal logos, compliance with hygiene standards, and safe operational practices in real business settings.

“This workshop is highly beneficial as it provides a clear understanding of how to apply for halal certification for both products and food premises. I hope programmes like this can be organised again in the future,” said Muhammad Izzat during an interview.
